Ingredient Glossary: Marine Collagen Peptides

What Is Collagen + Why Is It Important?

Collagen is a fundamental building block in our bodies - it is the most abundant protein. We produce it to strengthen and maintain our body’s structure and functions in things like bones, muscles, joints, tissues, tendons, hair, skin and nails. However, supplementing collagen into our daily diet is critical. Studies show that collagen production begins to slow and decline in our mid-20s and is sped up even more with exposure to environmental stressors. Generally, our diets are not high in collagen, so we need to take collagen supplements (liquid is the most effective form of supplementation). Fun Fact: Vitamin C is a cofactor in collagen synthesis - we need it present in our body to effectively form and store collagen.

Not only is it important to supplement collagen in our diet, we have to supplement with hydrolyzed collagen, commonly known as collagen peptides. The original collagen molecule is way too big for our gut to break down and benefit our body and skin. So, scientists in Japan created a hydrolyzed version: collagen peptides, which allows for far easier consumption and absorption.

Collagen In Our Skin

The dermis layer of our skin is home to fibroblasts - special cells that make our skin’s collagen - along with Elastin and Hyaluronic Acid. The deep layers (dermis) of our skin cannot be treated with topical skincare and requires a healthy diet and supplements to give us a radiating glow.

Our skin’s collagen network is made up of 85% Type I and 15% Type III. This is where Marine Collagen comes in as the best and only choice of collagen for our skin.

Why Hydrolyzed Marine Collagen?

The majority of marine collagen is 90% Type 1 and 10% Type III. This makes marine collagen the best form of collagen to consume and use topically since our skin’s collagen is made up of mostly Type 1. It is the most effective form of collagen to improve our skin’s structure, elasticity and firmness. Did you also know that it is the most bioavailable form of collagen due to the lower molecular weight (smaller size molecule) of fish-sourced collagen peptides when compared to other forms of collagen (bovine, pork, poultry)? A lower molecular weight (60x smaller to be exact) means enhanced absorption, which translates into increased bioavailability, making it 15x more efficient to absorb. To put this into perspective, it’s like swallowing a watermelon versus a blueberry! Not only are marine collagen peptides the best and most effective for our skin, they are also the most sustainable. They are processed from fish scales and/or fish skin -- parts of the fish that would otherwise be discarded, making them an environmentally responsible choice for collagen supplements.

Where Do We Source Our Collagen?

Rōzes Beauty was created with the consumers best interest in mind. Our Founder hopes to add value in the lives of all women and share her brand and story with you. We do not sacrifice the quality or efficacy of the ingredients we use to create our Beauty Tōnics and hope to share the best of what’s out there with you.

Our Founder wisely and purposefully chose to use Marine Collagen for the reasons listed above. She sourced high quality, Non-GMO & Kosher Collagen in Canada, and they extract their Hydrolyzed Marine Collagen from the skins of wild-caught North Atlantic Ocean cod fish.
